Leading internet sites have withdrawn potentially dangerous illegal tooth-whitening products from sale following an investigation.  Amazon, eBay and Google agreed to stop the goods being advertised on their pages after being alerted by consumer watchdog Which?

 A European Union regulation adopted last year bans the sale of tooth-whitening products containing more than 0.1% hydrogen peroxide or chemicals which release hydrogen peroxide.  The limit was introduced in response to concerns that the chemical could damage teeth, lips or gums.

Stuart Johnston, from the British Dental Association, told Which?: “High doses of hydrogen peroxide can burn the lining of the mouth if it’s not protected.”  Peter Vicary-Smith, chief executive of Which?, said: “These products are illegal, but ineffective policing means they are still widely available. ”We have shared our findings with Trading Standards and will continue to urge online retailers to boycott such harmful products being sold in their marketplaces.”

 A spokesman for Amazon said: “These items were offered by third-party sellers on our Amazon.co.uk Marketplace platform and have now been removed from sale.

 ”Please note that sellers on Amazon are prohibited from listing, on our Marketplace platform, products that do not comply with applicable laws.”

 A Google spokesman added: “We have a set of policies which govern what ads we do and do not allow… If we discover such ads we will take appropriate action.”

The dark side of whitening

A look inside the expensive scams that lure in many consumers looking online for whitening products.

Numerous whitening products sold online have been determined to be a part of widespread whitening scams.
It’s not unusual for people to purchase everything from shoes to electronics to entertainment and even food online, but a rash of scam Web sites and products of dubious origins have turned online shopping for teeth whitening products into a classic case of buyer beware.

Ads on legitimate Web sites are leading customers to fake blogs and other Web sites touting the benefits of products with names like Ivory White or Dazzle Smile. When a visitor submits a credit card number to cover the cost of shipping for a free sample, he or she is unknowingly signed up for $70-$90 in monthly charges for future shipments, and often is hit with third-party charges for unwanted weight loss products or acai berry supplements.

The scams have been so pervasive that on Oct. 1 the Better Business Bureau issued a consumer warning about online whitening sellers. The BBB cautions people to beware of third party endorsements, always read the fine print, check out unknown companies with the BBB and file a complaint if you feel you’ve been the victim of a scam.

Exposing the scams

Of course to people deeply involved with teeth whitening products, the BBB warning was long overdue. Back in January Sasha Sienkiewicz published an article on his teethwhiteningreviews.com Web site exposing a wide range of dubious whitening brands.

Normally his site serves as a forum for consumers to share their reviews and comments on over-the-counter and dentists dispensed products, but when site users began to contact him about scam products, he put his Web development training to use and began tracking down the scam artists. It started with hundreds of complaints about a product called Celebrity Sexy Teeth Whitener, but the more he poked around the Web, the more fake sites and untrustworthy products he found to add to the list he compiled in his article. In total, he believes these scams involve “millions and millions” of dollars.

“It’s quite sophisticated how they set up these scams,” he said. “By using the Internet for this scam they’re able to reach a lot of people. I started to search around a little bit and I noticed they were everywhere in terms of advertising.”

Online sleuthing

Sienkiewicz said the scammers begin by reaching out to customers through ads on legitimate Web sites. These ads take advantage of services such as Google AdWords to pop up for users who have searched for whitening products through their browser. He soon found the ads lead users to phony blogs, news sites and even fraudulent review sites modeled after his own.

Once on a possible scam site, Sienkiewicz put his Web knowledge to use, checking out the source code for signs of fraud such as phony security Web site badges, “live chat help,” that is actually a “bot” set to deliver automated responses based on what a user types and supposedly independent blog sites housed on the same server as the product site.

According to a new nationwide survey, 92% of people perceive a great smile as a valuable asset. Men and women are in agreement on what makes an appealing smile – having white teeth makes or breaks a smile, followed by straight teeth and full lips. In a recent survey conducted by the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD), 74% of men and women agree that an unattractive smile can hurt a person’s chances for career success.

New Treatment Offers hope for the Dental Phobic

Are you afraid of the dentist or have been putting it off ? For some people going to the dentist can be a terrifying experience. The drills, the smells and oh, that awful needle!

But now there’s a new way for the dentally challenged to get their needed treatment without having to go through all the fear and anxiety. And, what’s more, they likely won’t even remember going to the dentist.

It’s called “Sedation Dentistry” and is available right now at Dr Ushma Patel’s dental office.

“The way it works is quite simple,” says Johns Creek dentist Dr. Ushma Patel. “One hour before the appointment the patient simply takes a pill that we have dispensed to them. By the time they arrive for their appointment they are very relaxed.”

The patient is then escorted to the dental chair. They gradually progress to a deeper level of sedation but are still able to respond to their environment and to questions from the doctor. Dr. Patel explains, “The patient will feel no pain and in fact will have little or no memory of the experience after it’s all over.”

The patient’s vital signs are constantly monitored throughout the treatment. “When they awaken a friend drives them home and in an hour or so they are pretty much back to normal,” says Dr. Patel. “The best part is that they have no bad memories, and they don’t experience any pain or anxiety.”

The patient isn’t “knocked out” or in total sedation like they would be for a surgery. The level of sedation isn’t that deep, but just deep enough so that they feel nothing but are still conscious Dr. Patel says, “We find that while some patients have a deep fear of dental treatment, there are many who also have a deeper fear of being “put under.” Their actual fear centers around losing control or not being able to perceive what’s going on around them. Sedation Dentistry is a happy medium. They are still under control and understand what’s happening – they just don’t feel anything or have any anxiety about it.”

Is Sedation Dentistry only for dental chickens? Dr. Patel says no. “Some people, while they are not at all afraid of dental treatment, are highly resistant to anesthetic. They just can’t get numb. Other people simply don’t have the time to make repeated visits to the dentist and would rather have all their work done in one longer visit. Sedation Dentistry takes care of both problems.”

We all need saliva to moisten and cleanse our mouths and digest food. Saliva also prevents infection by controlling bacteria and fungi in the mouth. When we don’t produce enough saliva, our mouth gets dry and uncomfortable. Fortunately, there are many effective treatments for dry mouth

What causes dry mouth?

There are several causes of dry mouth. These include:

• Side effect of certain medications. Dry mouth is a common side effect of many prescription and nonprescription drugs, including drugs used to treat depression, anxiety, pain, allergies and colds (antihistamines and decongestants), obesity, acne, epilepsy, hypertension (diuretics), diarrhea, nausea, psychotic disorders, urinary incontinence, asthma (certain bronchodilators), and Parkinson’s disease. Dry mouth is also a side effect of muscle relaxants and sedatives.
• Side effect of certain diseases and infections. Dry mouth can be a side effect of medical conditions, including Sjogren’s syndrome, HIV/AIDS, Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes, anemia, cystic fibrosis, rheumatoid arthritis, hypertension, Parkinson’s disease, stroke, and mumps.
• Side effect of certain medical treatments. Damage to the salivary glands, the glands that produce saliva, for example, from radiation to the head and neck and chemotherapy treatments for cancer, can reduce the amount of saliva produced.
• Nerve damage. Dry mouth can be a result of nerve damage to the head and neck area from an injury or surgery.
• Dehydration. Conditions that lead to dehydration, such as fever, excessive sweating, vomiting, diarrhea, blood loss, and burns can cause dry mouth.
• Surgical removal of the salivary glands.
• Lifestyle. Smoking or chewing tobacco can affect saliva production and aggravate dry mouth. Continuously breathing with your mouth open can also contribute to the problem.

What are the symptoms of dry mouth?

Common symptoms of dry mouth include:

• A sticky, dry feeling in the mouth
• Frequent thirst
• Sores in the mouth; sores or split skin at the corners of the mouth; cracked lips
• A dry feeling in the throat
• A burning or tingling sensation in the mouth and especially on the tongue
• A dry, red, raw tongue
• Problems speaking or difficulty tasting, chewing and swallowing
• Hoarseness, dry nasal passages, sore throat
• Bad breath
• Why is dry mouth a problem?
•  Besides causing the aggravating symptoms mentioned above, dry mouth also increases a person’s risk of gingivitis (gum disease), tooth decay, and mouth infections, such as thrush.

  Dry mouth can also make it difficult to wear dentures.

  How is dry mouth treated?

   

  If you think your dry mouth is caused by certain medications you are taking, talk to your doctor. He or she may adjust the dose you are taking or switch you to a different drug that doesn’t cause dry mouth.

  In addition, an oral rinse to restore mouth moisture may be prescribed. If that doesn’t help, a medication that stimulates saliva production, called Salagen, may be prescribed.

  Other steps you can take that may help improve saliva flow include

  • Sucking on sugar-free candy or chewing sugar-free gum
  • Drinking plenty of water to help keep your mouth moist
  • Protecting your teeth by brushing with a fluoride toothpaste, using a fluoride rinse, and visiting your dentist regularly
  • Breathing through your nose, not your mouth, as much as possible
  • Using a room vaporizer to add moisture to the bedroom air
  • Using an over-the-counter artificial saliva substitute.
